1. Another Production Milestone! Bokpoort Breaks A Concentrated Solar Power Record

It’s announced that on the 27th November 2017, South Africa’s Bokpoort CSP clocked production of 1009.31 MWh in a single day. This is the highest production ever over a single 24 hour period. The previous record was 999.13 MWh on 28th November 2016 which fell just short of the “Sweet Spot” of 1000 MWh per day.

The Deputy MD of ACWA Power for the Southern African region and member of the Board of Bokpoort CSP, Mr. Nandu Bhula explained, “Bokpoort has set a new African record of 161 hours of continuous operations for a renewable plant, with day & night production in March last year and now topping that by setting a new record for the highest daily production is truly amazing. The plant has also recently achieved 100% of its base case production expectations.”

2. Financial Closure on Dubai Concentrated Solar Power Will be Reached in Early 2018

ACWA Power will reach financial closure on the world’s largest single-site concentrated solar power (CSP) project, currently underway in Dubai, by the first quarter of 2018, its chief executive said on Monday.

In September, ACWA Power, in consortium with China’s Shanghai Power, was selected by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to build a 700 megawatt (MW) extension to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Complex in Dubai, after submitting one of the lowest tariffs for a CSP project at 7.3 US cents per kilowatt-hour. The project is valued at Dh14.2 billion.

“We’re very confident of achieving financial closure on target for the Dubai plant in the first quarter; the minute the financing closes, and it goes into construction, people realise it’s real and it creates yet another buzz around it,” Paddy Padmanathan told The National in an interview in Abu Dhabi.

3. Review Meeting of Feasibility Studies on Jinfan Golmud 2×100MW Molten Salt Parabolic Trough CSP Project to be Held Successfully

On December 11, Review meeting of feasibility studies on Jinfan Golmud 2×100MW Molten Salt Parabolic Trough CSP Project was successfully held in Beijing. The project feasibility study report was prepared by Power Construction Corporation of China Northwest Engineering Corporation Limited(hereinafter referred to as “Northwest Engineering”) and Golmud Jinfan CSP Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as ” Jinfan CSP”) is the construction unit of the project.

The review meeting was presided over by the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute and representatives from Qinghai Energy Bureau, State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Company, Haixi People’s Government and other units attended the feasibility review.

Northwest Engineering carried out a detailed description of the project’s feasibility study report. The solar collector system of the project chooses trough parabolic reflectors to concentrate light and absorb heat. The heat-absorbing pipe adopts the straight-through vacuum tube. The total aperture area of the mirror field is about 2.83 million㎡. The project is designed to deploy a molten salt heat storage system for up to 15 hours and binary molten salts (60% NaNO3 and 40% KNO3) will be selected as endothermic / heat transfer medium. The total heat storage capacity of the project is 7640 MWth.

4. AfDB To Approve $265 Million for 800 MW Moroccan Solar Project

As part of its New Deal on Energy for Africa, the African Development Bank has approved $324 million in loans support to two renewable energy projects. $265 million has been earmarked for two solar power plants –NOORM I and NOORM II.
The two NOORM projects will consist of two separate CSP plants, each with 150 to 190 MW CSP capacity, and a minimum of five hours of thermal storage. PV capacity is expected to be between 150 and 210 MW.

When complete, the plants will be connected to the national grid, where the 800 MW are expected to supply around 6% of the country’s population.

5. Jinfan Delingha 2×50MW Molten Salt Parabolic Trough CSP Project: Review Meeting of Feasibility Studies to be Held Successfully

On December 12, review meeting of feasibility studies on Jinfan Delingha 2×50MW Molten Salt Parabolic Trough CSP Project was successfully held in Beijing.

At the meeting, according to China Energy Engineering Group Xinjiang Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Xinjiang Institute”)who prepared the project feasibility study report, the project is located in the northwest side of Xuji Township, Delingha City, Qinghai Province, about 40 kilometers away from Delingha city. It adopts the molten salt parabolic trough technology, and plans to install two high-temperature and ultra-high pressure primary intermediate reheat air-cooled condensing steam turbine generators. The project is designed to configure a molten salt thermal storage system for up to 15 hours with a total heat storage capacity of 1915MWth.

6. Long-delayed Redstone CSP to be Signed “in Next Week”

Redstone, the 100 MW tower project from ACWA Power and SolarReserve is one of the 27 outstanding renewable energy contracts that the state-owned electricity company Eskom has failed to honor for a year and a half. The project includes 12 hours of thermal energy storage for delivering dispatchable power after dark.

At the Energy Indaba in Johannasburg, South Africa’s new Energy Minister, David Mahlobo announced that he has now signed off on the 27 outstanding renewable energy contracts.

South Africa’s renewable contracts under the REIPPPP (Renewable Energy Independant Power Producer Program) were viewed as exemplary for their professionalism and openness. The future will likely look very different.
