Review Meeting on the Feasibility Study of Urad 50MW Fresnel CSP Project of North Union

 On 12th – 13th September, the review meeting on the feasibility study of Urad 50MW Fresnel CSP Project of North Union Power Company(North Union for short) was held in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. Over ten local functional departments, including China Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute (EPPEI), North Union Power Company, North China Power Engineering Co., Ltd, Bayannur Development and Reform Commission of Inner Mongolia, and the representatives of Urad Power Plant attended this meeting.

The project will adopt the linear Fresnel  technique, to build a 50MW CSP plant , which is expected to go into grid  in 2018. This project is in the list of  first batch of CSP demonstration projects of China. According to the materials, the project will use the Fresnel CSP technique,  with a 6-hour  storage system.

Before, China Huaneng Clean Energy Research Institute(CHCERI for short), affiliated to China Huaneng Group, which is an important investor and shareholder of North Union, has done a focused research on Fresnel technique for years. Last year, CHCERI has finished an overall test on the ternary-molten-salt thermal energy storage system, which is used in the 1.5MWth Fresnel CSP project, built in Sanya, Hainan by CHCERI.  Results of the test shows it has met the setting  goals. In view of years of abundant experience accumulated through the above demonstration project as technical support, the planned 50MW project, also possessing a good technical advantage and a strong economic strength,  being chosen as the first demonstration project is not a surprise.

It’s known that there are many advantages for building this project, including rich solar resource, available water, electricity and gas pipes and excellent professional personnel. Meanwhile, there is no need to acquire more land for the project. The unused land left by the old plant can be used directly, which is favorable to restrain dust, decrease air pollution and improve local improvement, yielding remarkable economic and social benefits.

As far as we know, this review meeting was hosted by Wang Xiaojing, the deputy chief engineer of EPPEI. In the process of reviewing, related personnel including professional technical personnel, designers and investors, divided into six groups, carried on a deep and detailed discussion on the issues of technology, land, environmental protection and economy. At the same time, they offered more suggestions on the problems in this feasibility study report, playing an important role in guiding the sustainable development of the project.

Meanwhile, this meeting has lay a solid foundation for the approval, construction and operation of the project, served as a positive demonstrative role for driving the development of China CSP cause.
