The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the world’s leading research and development laboratory for renewable energy technologies, is seeking to hire a post- doctoral candidate in image processing with deep learning or a closely related field of study. The candidate will work with other engineers and scientists in the Thermal Sciences Group within the Buildings & Thermal Sciences Center. The primary responsibility will be conducting research and development activities in support of new solar field performance survey technology in the Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Program. See www.nrel.gov/csp. The candidate will join a team of engineers and scientists studying solar thermal power, geothermal power and thermal storage technologies. Work carried out will support research and development activities within the CSP Program that are conducted internally at NREL and externally by industry and university participants. The candidate will work under direct supervision on assigned activities.
Basic work responsibilities will include image-process code programming adopting deep learning techniques, computation algorithm optimization, optical tool development and solar field performance evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on the development of a solar field optical assessment and correction tool which can be applied to a commercial CSP solar field. Assumed responsibilities include close attention to documenting work in detailed technical records, maintaining clean and safe work conditions, conducting work with the highest professional standards, and presenting and publishing research in technical forums.
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years. The successful candidate will have completed coursework or have demonstrated experience related to image-processing, deep learning techniques, and efficient computing.
This position requires advanced knowledge in image processing with deep learning techniques and fundamental understanding on image optics and high-speed computing.
Position requires a Ph.D. in Engineering or Applied Mathematics, or closely related field of image-processing and deep-learning (machine learning). Proficiency with programming languages with Matlab, Python, Mathematica, and C++ is preferred.
The successful candidate will have a track record of academic performance. Modeling experience with Matlab programming is desired. Knowledge of solar collector optical error measurement/interpretation is beneficial.
The candidate must demonstrate a research capability to solve challenging problems, have excellent interpersonal, communication, writing and documentation skills. This position requires creativity, innovation, and adaptability.
While not a requirement for this position, relevant experience can include solar thermal collector designs and renewable energy systems.
