China’s Shanghai Electric Group has completed the installation of the molten salt receiver (MSR) on top of the tower for the 950-MW Noor Energy 1 concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) project in Dubai.

The tower-related construction was finalised in record 240 days despite needing to implement additional safety procedures due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Shanghai-based contractor highlighted.

Shanghai Electric performs the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) duties for the Noor Energy 1 solar thermal project.

The hybrid plant will feature 700 MW of Concentrating Solar Power capacity from the 100-MW central tower and 600 MW of parabolic trough, and 250 MW of PV power. It is the fourth phase of the 5-GW Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which merges the two technologies.

The latest milestone involved the installation of the 40-metre MSR on top of the heat tower body, itself around 222 metres high. The resulting structure is about 262 metres high, which makes it the tallest solar power tower in the world, Shanghai Electric said.

Once the hybrid plant is fully up and running, it will be capable of generating electricity for an estimated 320,000 households.
